This is a more detailed step by step tutorial for the nose and mouth. It splits the video tutorial into individual phases for you to follow along with and help you draw the nose and the mouth. This is a good way to see the evolution of the drawing in each of its phases. You can use this with my video to see how I do it. For this drawing you will ned a 2B or 3B pencil, or a pencil set, an eraser, an A4/A3 sheet of paper and a blending stub or tissue (or you can just use your finger).

Good Luck!

Step 1: Outline phase 1

For the first phase of the outline, we start with drawing the nose. To start drawing the nose, we start with drawing this curved line. The curls on the the two ends of the line, are the nostrils, and the curve in the middle, is the tip of the nose.

Step 2: Outline phase 2

For the next step of the outline draw two curves around the nostrils to create the edges.

Step 7: Outline Mouth phase 3
Then draw two lines going outwards from the small 'v' curve drawn earlier. These lines will go slightly past the nose. Then draw a small curve inwards and curve the line into the previous curve you drew in the middle. It should look similar to the drawing seen on te left. This is the upper lip.

Nose and Mouth Tutorial

Step 4: Outline phase 4

Then draw to small lines under the tip of the nose to show the small indent between your nose and your mouth.

Step 3: Outline phase 3

For the next step of the outline, draw these lines to give you a rough idea of how the nose is shaped and how it will look

Step 5: Outline Mouth phase 1

To start with the mouth draw a small 'v' where direcctly underneath the indent.

Step 6: Outline Mouth phase 2

Then draw two lines underneath to show the curves of the mouth. The one in the middle will be curved downwards, similar to the small 'v', and the lower line will be curved upwards.

Step 8: Outline Mouth phase 4

To draw the lower lip, start near the edges of the upper lip. Draw two lines, diagonally downwards that curve into the lower line drawn before. The drawing should look something like this when you have completed the mouth. Draw a smal curved line underneath to indicate the chin.

Step 9: Shading Nose phase 1

To start shading the nose, draw in this shape to give you the general idea of where the darkest shades will be.

Step 10: Shading Nose phase 2

Then fill in this shape with a really dark grey or black. Then on the right side, along the length of the nose and next to the nostril there will be a shadow. Then shade in the are next to a lgihter grey to create a gradient when blending. Shade in the nostrils a black as well.

Step 11: Shading Nose phase 3

Using your assigned blending tool, Blend in the shades together, trying to create a gradient oalong the right side. Around the nostrils leave the edges of the nostrils lighter, and the middle of the nostrils darker.

Step 12: Shading Nose phase 4

Then using your assigned blending tool, shade in the appropriate areas of the nose, leaving the left hand side mostly white. Again try to create a gradient to let the shades build on each other. Shade the left hand side of the indent underneath the nose dark and the area next to that and around the mouth a lighter shade.

Step 13: Shading Chin phase 1

Using your assigned blending tool blend in the main area of the right cheek. The edges around the mouth going down will be extremely dark as there is a shadow and the same for around the chin line. Create a gradient of grey around those areas to shade them.

Step 17: Blending & Final Outcome

This is the completed nose and mouth. The techniques learnt here should be applicable to any other drawing you do. I encourage you to keep on practicing with other visual references and check out my other tutorials if you liked this one.

Step 14: Shading Chin phase 2

Here shade the left side of the nose a lighter shade than the right. The edges of the mouth and the nose will be darker than the rest, but otherwise you will need to use a much lighter shade. Use your pencil and blending tool lightly around these areas.

Step 15: Shading Mouth phase 1

Shade in these general shapes to get a general idea of how to shade the mouth. These general areas will be the darkest.

Step 16: Shading Mouth phase 2

Blend in these shapes using your blending tool and then use your erase to create highlihgt along the mouth and to give it depth. Keep some small dark lines to bring out the indentations in the mouth more.
