This is a more detailed step by step tutorial for the eye crying. It splits the video tutorial into individual phases for you to follow along with and help you draw the eye. This is a good way to see the evolution of the drawing in each of its phases. You can use this with my video to see how I do it. For this drawing you will ned a 2B or 3B pencil, or a pencil set, an eraser, an A4/A3 sheet of paper and a blending stub or tissue (or you can just use your finger).

Good Luck!

Step 1: Outline phase 1

For the outline, first draw this oval like shape. You will notice that the highest and lowest points are not directly parallel to each other. The tip on the right is the tear gland. Notice how the tips on both of the sides are not pointed, but curved very slightly. At the bottom of the eye shape it will be slightly flatter where the tear is. In my drawing tutorial, you will be able to see how I draw this shape, and if you are confuse on where to start then you can follow the video. Just note that I tend to erase my mistakes a lot, so you might want to watch it in sections before drawing.

Step 2: Outline phase 2

The next step for the outline is to draw in the tear gland, the tear, some light reflections, and the guidelines for the eyelid. The top line shows the top of the eyelid and the bottom line is guide for where to place the eyelashes. They curve around the eye in a similar shape. Add small light reflections tot the tear gland and the tear.

Step 7: Shading the Tear Gland

To shade the tear gland you need to make the borders and the small line running through it dark and thick. Then shade the entire area a dark grey, keeping the light reflections white. If you cannot avoid shading the light reflections, use a thin eraser to create the light reflections again. Add a thin line around the light reflections to make it more prominent and give it more depth.

Step 4: Upper Eyelashes

The next step is to add in the eyelashes. If you have not seen my previous tutorial for the eye, or looked at the page for the how to draw the eye, and you are wondering how to start wiht the eyelashes I recommend you look at the regular eye tutorial first (found under Portraiture tutorials). The eyelashes follow a similar pattern, starting small on the right and getting longer to the left. Use small sharp flicks of the pencil to get clean lines for the eyelashes. The lines will still curve into the eye slightly, making the yelashes look like they are coming from underneath the eyelashes. About halfway up the eye, the eyelashes start to cross the line marking the eyelid. On the left of the eye, it becomes thicker and the eyelashes are pointed more towards the left than up.

Step 3: Outline phase 3

The next step is to add in the iris and the pupil and the light reflections. Start with the light reflections as some overlap with the other lines. There will be many more shapes for the light reflections, since the eye is wete from crying. When the eye is more wet more light reflections can be seen. Try to make the iris as circular as possible, and do not make the pupil too small.

Step 5: Lower Eyelashes

The lower eyelashes are somewhat similar to the upper eyelashes. They still curve into the line and you still need to use small sharp flicks of the pencil to get them clean and sharp. The main differences are that there is a tiny gap between the lower eyelashes and the eye, and they are much smaller and thinner. The eyelashes aren't all grouped together and they are more singular. Where the tear is you will see a small part of the eyelashes sticking out since the tear is transparent. Remember to add a few crossing over here and there.

Step 6: Shading the Tear

To start shading we will start with the tear. It will be darkest on the top of the tear and lightest at the bottom. Try to create a gradient of shading going downwards in the tear. Remember to leave the light reflections completely white.

Step 8: Iris phase 1

To start shading the iris, first shade the pupil completely black. Then using a dark grey, shade the top part of the iris. Remember the top part tof the ye will be the darkest part of the eye because it will be receiving shadows. The irsi will be the darkest part of the eye. Using a lighter shade of grey (still quite dark) shade in this circular patter on the eye. Make the borders of the iris thick and dark.

Step 9: Iris phase 2

Using a blending stub or tissue or just your finger. Blend in the different shades together. Remember to leave the lgiht reflections white and use an eraser to recreate the reflections, if you did shade through it.

Step 10: Iris phase 3

Now add short, sharp, black lines around the border of the iris, not going the whole way around. This will help bring out the border even more.

Step 11: Using the eraser for highlights

After this, use a small, thin eraser to create small highlights in the eye. inbetween the black lines and also slightly under the pupil. This will help create contrast when shading and also bring out the depth of the eye.

Step 12: Shading the White of the Eye

To shade the white part of the eye, first add in the basic shades to blend in later. Remember the top part will be the darkest and the whole white part of the eye will be lighter than the iris in general. Remember to leave the light reflections completely white. The border areas around the tips of the eye will also be darker than the rest.

Step 13: Blending

Once you have finished adding the general shades, blend it all together using your blending tool. Leaving the main white part a lighter shade, and then creating a gradient that runs tough the eye will help give it depth. Use darker shades around the borders of things. Use an erase afterwards to create highlights and lighter shades.

Step 14: Final Outcome

This is the finished outcome of the drawing, To finish off I quickly blended the area under the lower eyelashes to give the eye more depth. The techniques learnt here should be applicable to any other drawing you do. I encourage you to keep on practicing and check out my other tutorials.
